Torrice Media contributed to a video segment for CBC Canada’s La Semaine Verte program about saving the ash tree from extinction. The segment looks at the cutting edge research being done at the USFS Research Station in Delaware, Ohio. They are successfully breeding native ash trees that are resistant to the Emerald Ash Borer, as well as using grafting techniques that combine Manchurian Ash with American native. The hope is that in a few years they can provide seeds from both to replant ash around the country.
“We are racing the clock, right now, though, going in to the wild to find the few wild trees that are surviving the EAB infestation before they are destroyed,” said Dr. Jennifer Koch of the USFS Research Station Nursery. Only about one percent of some ash species are surviving.
